Students will write a 2-4 minute "I Have A Dream" speech related to unit sources and individual experiences.


Common Core: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.



Warm Up

The class will have a look at the K-W-L chart generated prior to get ready to write their speeches.  Students will be asked about their conversations at home the night before.

New Material



Students will write an opinion piece using good grammar and spelling, organization, word choice, and ideas.  Students will be coached on good speech writing strategies such as repeating key lines and delivery techniques such as strong voice projection.


Students will be informally evaluated on the efforts they make in preparing for their individual "I Have a Dream" speech.

Closure and Reflection

Students will share how their speech writing processes are going.  Peers will offer feedback and suggestions in a positive, supporting manner.
